Hand-Pounded, Not Artificially Polished

Commercial processors intensively mill or polish some pulses to create a smoother, more uniform appearance. Eat Right Basket hand-pounds this Moong Chhilka Daal and supplies it completely without artificial glazing or added colour. Because we avoid heavy mechanical processing, part of the natural green skin remains visible, and the grains may differ slightly in size and shade. By managing this crop directly through the Satat Sampada initiative, we maintain transparent sourcing from cultivation in Etawah straight to processing and packing in Noida.

Taste, Texture, and Appearance

The daal displays a natural mix of pale yellow split grains and green outer skins. Because our team hand-pounds the grains, you will notice slight natural variations in grain size and shape. When cooked, it yields a soft, creamy texture with a mild, earthy flavour that easily absorbs tempering spices. The retained skin provides dietary fibre alongside the pulse's natural plant protein.

How to Prepare

  1. Wash and soak: Rinse the daal thoroughly under running water. Soak the grains for 10 to 15 minutes before cooking to ensure an even texture.
  2. Pressure cook: Place the rinsed daal in a pressure cooker using a ratio of 1.5 to 2 cups of water for every 1 cup of daal. Cook on high for one whistle, then lower the heat and simmer for 10 minutes.
  3. Temper (Tadka): Heat ghee or your preferred cooking oil in a pan. Temper with cumin, garlic, tomato, and your choice of spices. Pour the hot tempering over the cooked daal and mix well.

Storage Instructions

Transfer the daal to an airtight steel or glass container immediately after opening the pouch. Keep the container in a cool, dry space away from direct sunlight and ambient moisture. Checking the grains periodically ensures they maintain their best quality throughout their six-month shelf life.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does this Moong Daal still have green skin?

We intentionally retain the natural green skin because this is Moong Chhilka Daal, not completely dehusked Moong Dhuli Daal. The visible skin and slightly uneven grains represent normal features of traditionally hand-pounded daal.

Why do the grains look uneven?

The grains may vary slightly in size, colour, and shape because we hand-pound the daal rather than intensively polishing it for a perfectly uniform appearance. This natural variation does not affect its quality or cooking.

Is this Moong Daal polished or artificially coloured?

We apply no artificial glazing, polishing, or added colour. The daal retains its natural green skin and therefore looks less shiny and less uniform than heavily processed pulses.

Does Moong Chhilka Daal need soaking?

Soaking helps but remains optional. Rinse the daal thoroughly and soak it for 10–15 minutes for more even cooking. You can also cook it without soaking, although it can take slightly longer.

Where is this Moong Daal grown and processed?

Eat Right Basket grows the Moong as its own crop in the Etawah district of Uttar Pradesh. We clean, hand-pound, and pack it at our facility in Sector 65, Noida.
