Bringing Bengal’s Heirloom Rice Back to the Indian Plate: Radhunipagol and Karpurkanti

Bengal’s Heirloom Rice

Bringing Bengal’s Heirloom Rice Back to the Indian Plate: Radhunipagol and Karpurkanti

Some foods do more than fill a plate. They carry memory, soil, scent, culture and the wisdom of generations. Bengal’s heirloom rice varieties are one such treasure and at Eat Right Basket, we are delighted to bring two rare indigenous rice varieties to our customers: Radhunipagol Rice and Kapurkanti Rice.

These are not ordinary rice varieties. They are part of India’s living food heritage, traditional, aromatic, region-specific grains that were once grown, cooked and celebrated in local communities, but slowly disappeared from everyday kitchens as high-yielding commercial varieties took over.

Today, with the efforts of farmers, grassroots organisations and NGOs working in West Bengal, these heirloom rice varieties are being revived so that India’s indigenous food diversity can return to the field and the plate.

Why Heirloom Rice Matters

Green revolution in India pushed agriculture fields to monocropping for bulk production of cash crops forcing diversity to make way for uniformity. This meant – fewer crop varieties that were hybridized to give higher yield, faster harvests, but in turn they needed more care, higher input cost in terms of urea, fertilizers and pesticides etc. and more water-intensive cultivation.

This took a toll on indigenous varieties grown at local levels which included thousands of our own rice varieties. Let’s look at the story of two such rice varieties largely protected and promoted by indigenous communities of West Bengal – Radhunipagol and Kapurkanti

These varieties are rooted in local ecology. Many such indigenous rice varieties are known for their resilience, distinctive aroma, deep taste and lower water needs compared to several commercial varieties. For small and tribal farmers, such crops can support more sustainable farming systems while reducing dependence on resource-heavy modern varieties.

At a time when climate change is making farming more uncertain through erratic rainfall, heat stress, water scarcity and shifting seasons, restoring indigenous seed diversity is not nostalgia. It is food security. It is climate wisdom.

Bengal’s Heirloom Rice

Radhunipagol Rice: The Rice That Makes the Cook Go Crazy

Radhunipagol is a small-grained, non-basmati aromatic rice indigenous to West Bengal. Its name is as charming as its fragrance, it roughly translates to “the cook goes crazy”, referring to the intense, intoxicating aroma it releases while growing and cooking.

Traditionally grown in the lower Gangetic plains and the Rarh region of West Bengal, including districts such as Birbhum, Bankura, Hooghly and Purulia, Radhunipagol has been cultivated in Bengal for nearly 400 to 500 years. It appears in 19th-century records, including district gazetteers and Watt’s Dictionary of the Economic Products of India.

For generations, this rice has held a special place in Bengali kitchens. It has been preferred for making Payesh, Pitha, festive Bhog and traditional Khichuri. Its grain is short, brownish-white or straw-coloured, with unhusked paddy often carrying distinctive purple spots at the tip. It is known for its earthy, sweet aroma, soft texture and memorable taste.

Unlike many refined rice varieties, Radhunipagol is also noted for its iron and zinc content. It is a photosensitive, long-duration Kharif crop, taking around 155 days to mature, and is deeply connected with the rhythm of the monsoon.

Kapurkanti Rice: Fragrance from the Sundarbans Delta

Kapurkanti, also known as Karpurkanti, is a rare indigenous aromatic rice native to the Sundarbans delta of West Bengal. Traditionally grown in the saline, mangrove-dominated landscape of the delta, it is a hardy heritage paddy cultivated on a small scale by local farmers, including women farmers.

Its name comes from “Karpur”, meaning camphor, referring to its distinctive camphor-like fragrance. The uncooked grains are short, bright white and needle-like. When cooked, Kapurkanti releases a unique aroma often described as floral, warm and almost popcorn-like.

Unlike delicate dessert rice, Kapurkanti has a firm and robust texture, making it excellent for savoury dishes. It pairs beautifully with Bengali-style khichuri, fried rice, vegetable preparations and full-bodied curries. For those who love aromatic rice with character, Kapurkanti offers a completely different eating experience.

Once nearly forgotten, this folk rice is now being revived by ethical farming initiatives, rural cooperatives and biodiversity-focused groups working to preserve Bengal’s traditional seed heritage.

Supporting Farmers, Biodiversity and Better Food

When you choose heirloom rice, you are not just buying a grain. You are supporting farmers, indigenous seeds, biodiversity and traditional food systems.

The revival of Radhunipagol and Kapurkanti is important because it creates a market for farmers who are willing to preserve these rare varieties. Without consumer demand, farmers are often forced to abandon such crops. But when conscious customers choose indigenous rice, they help make traditional farming economically viable again.

Every purchase becomes a small vote for biodiversity over uniformity, taste over blandness, and ecological farming over chemical-intensive food systems.

At Eat Right Basket, our mission has always been to bring clean, honest and naturally grown food to Indian homes. By adding Radhunipagol Rice and Kapurkanti Rice to our range, we are proud to support the journey of Bengal’s heirloom rice from marginal fields back to modern kitchens.

Bring home Bengal’s heirloom rice. Cook slowly. Eat mindfully. Keep India’s food heritage alive.

Do not overcomplicate your health, your body knows exactly what to do with real food. Clean up your pantry, remove the heavy refined fats and let traditional organic staples do the heavy lifting.
